Manual sliding door stopper can deform (2021-2025 builds)
Symptoms: opening the manual sliding door hard can bend the door stopper; the deformation grows, and eventually the door can ride over the stopper and jam so it cannot be closed
What to do: Manual sliding door versions only (the same recall covers the Atrai of the same code). Ask a Daihatsu dealer to check the frame number; the stopper is inspected, the stopper rubber replaced and any deformation corrected free. Open the door gently until done.
Service schedule
| Item | Interval | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Engine oil change (turbo) Important | every 3,000 mi (5,000 km) or 6 months | Same Daihatsu accessory page: turbo kei cars 5,000 km or 6 months; severe use 2,500 km. |
| Engine oil change (naturally aspirated) | every 6,000 mi (10,000 km) or 6 months | Daihatsu accessory page (daihatsu.co.jp, read 2026-10-26): kei cars 10,000 km or 6 months, whichever is first; it is a general kei figure ("one example"), not a Hijet-specific table. Severe use (rough roads, mountain driving, high mileage) halves it to 5,000 km. Check the car's maintenance booklet. |
| Engine oil filter | every 12,000 mi (20,000 km) | Daihatsu recommends a new filter at every second oil change; 20,000 km is that rule applied to the 10,000 km oil interval (turbo: every 10,000 km). |
| CVT fluid Important | every 31,000 mi (50,000 km) | Daihatsu accessory page: CVT fluid is a guide figure of 50,000 km; the page says the fluid type depends on model and production date, so use the one the booklet names. |
| Brake fluid Important | every 24 months | Daihatsu accessory page: replace at every shaken inspection (first at 3 years, then every 2 years), i.e. about every 24 months. |
| Drive belt and air cleaner element | — | No interval sourced. Inspect at each service and replace on condition (squealing belt, dirty element); the intervals are in the paper maintenance booklet. |
| Engine coolant Important | — | No interval stated: Daihatsu's page only says to follow the maintenance booklet and to check concentration (30% normal, 50% cold climate). Not a manufacturer interval. |
| Spark plugs | — | No interval given. Daihatsu says platinum or iridium plugs do not need replacing at a routine inspection; otherwise follow the maintenance booklet. |

Known problems
- Critical usually from 0 mi (0 km)
Automatic gearbox valve body wear and oil leak (2015-2020 builds)
Symptoms: the automatic valve body can wear and leak oil, and the control computer may not notice; a large leak can engage a clutch unintentionally and cause a brief sharp slow-down
What to do: Automatic vans only (the Atrai Wagon S321G/S331G is included). Ask a Daihatsu dealer to check the frame number; the computer is reflashed and the valve body replaced if it leaks.
- Critical usually from 0 mi (0 km)
Connecting-rod bearing seizure on 3-speed automatics run low on oil (2007-2010 builds)
Symptoms: on 3-speed automatic vans used hard at high speed, running low on engine oil can burn out the connecting-rod bearings; knocking noise first, then engine failure
What to do: Applies to the early 3-speed automatic vans. Ask a Daihatsu dealer to check the frame number; the oil-pressure warning threshold was changed and a rev limit added when the light comes on. Check the oil level regularly on a high-mileage van and treat an oil-pressure light as stop-now.
- Critical usually from 0 mi (0 km)
Crankshaft angle sensor may fail and stop the engine (2007-2010 builds)
Symptoms: the coil inside the crank angle sensor can break under repeated high-rpm running; the engine can cut out while driving or refuse to start
What to do: Ask a Daihatsu dealer to check the frame number; the sensor is replaced free. The Atrai Wagon S321G/S331G of the same period is included.
- Critical usually from 0 mi (0 km)
Front coil spring paint may flake and the spring break (2016-2017 builds)
Symptoms: poor paint adhesion lets stones strip the coating from the front coil spring and rust spreads early; a broken spring can puncture the tyre and leave the van undriveable
What to do: Ask a Daihatsu dealer to check the frame number; both front springs are replaced free. Look at the springs for rust or a rattle on bumps.
- Critical usually from 0 mi (0 km)
Steering gear can rust from A/C condensate (2017-2020 builds)
Symptoms: air-conditioner drain water drips onto the steering-gear boot seal and gets inside; rust inside the gear causes noise and in the worst case a bearing breaks and steering is lost
What to do: Ask a Daihatsu dealer to check the frame number; an extension hose is fitted to the A/C drain and the gear is inspected or replaced free. Grinding or rough steering noise on these vans should not wait.
- Worth watching
Water pump bearing noise on the KF engine
Symptoms: rattling, growling or squealing from the front of the engine at idle and on start-up that follows the engine speed, sometimes with coolant weeping from the pump weep hole; a failed pump can overheat the engine
What to do: Have the pump listened to with a long screwdriver or stethoscope if a noise appears; replace the pump (and the drive belt and coolant, which come off anyway) rather than driving on. On a Hijet the job is described as roughly an hour for a mechanic with the pump and pulley as the main parts. Check the cooling system when buying a high-mileage car.
- Good to know usually from 62,000 mi (100,000 km)
Clutch wear on manual vans, release bearing first
Symptoms: high or slipping biting point, noise from the release bearing when the pedal is pressed, juddering from rest on a van with a few hundred thousand starts
What to do: Expect a clutch job on a hard-used manual van; ask the shop to renew cover, disc, release bearing and the crankshaft rear oil seal together, as the labour overlaps. Avoid resting a foot on the pedal.
- Good to know usually from 93,000 mi (150,000 km)
KF valve-cover gasket and crankshaft rear seal can leak oil
Symptoms: oil seepage around the cylinder head cover, and at the back of the engine where the flywheel-side seal holder bolts on, showing as oil film or drips and a burning smell
What to do: Check the head-cover edge and the bell-housing area on a used van. Re-sealing is normally done with a clutch job. A gasket renewed at the head cover is cheap; the rear seal needs the gearbox off.

Ignition key cylinder may crack (July-Oct 2007 builds)
Symptoms: the ignition (and door) key cylinders were made with too much lead; if muddy water gets in the cylinder weakens and can break so the key can no longer be used
What to do: Ask a Daihatsu dealer to check the frame number; the cylinders are replaced free. Do not force a stiff key.

Manufacturer-declared fuel economy
No manufacturer-declared figures for this model are in the Knowledge Base yet. A figure without the cycle it was measured under is not comparable to anything, so we publish none rather than a number you cannot interpret.

Frequently asked
What are the most common Daihatsu Hijet Cargo problems?
The faults reported most often are: Automatic gearbox valve body wear and oil leak (2015-2020 builds); Connecting-rod bearing seizure on 3-speed automatics run low on oil (2007-2010 builds); Crankshaft angle sensor may fail and stop the engine (2007-2010 builds). Symptoms, the mileage each appears at and what to do about it are all above.
How often does the Daihatsu Hijet Cargo need servicing?
Engine oil change (turbo) — every 3,000 mi (5,000 km) or 6 months. The full published schedule is above; your car's own service book always takes precedence.
Where does this data come from?
