MG HS: common problems, service schedule and fuel economy
What typically goes wrong on the MG HS, at what mileage, and what keeping it right involves — from Brimly's Vehicle Knowledge Base, where every fault is checked by a human before publication.

New generation — limited long-term data
Symptoms: No established long-term fault pattern yet for the 2024+ all-new HS or its Super Hybrid plug-in drivetrain.
What to do: The second-generation HS (and the 2025 Super Hybrid PHEV) is too recent for a proven reliability record. Keep to the schedule, apply dealer software updates, and rely on MG's long warranty. Low-speed dual-clutch smoothness on the petrol is worth checking on a test drive.
Service schedule
| Item | Interval | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Cabin filter | every 9,000 mi (15,000 km) | — |
| Engine oil & filter change | every 9,000 mi (15,000 km) or 12 months | Shorten under severe/short-trip use; verify the interval in the service book. |
| Air filter | every 19,000 mi (30,000 km) | — |
| Spark plugs important | every 25,000 mi (40,000 km) | — |
| Transmission / hybrid drive-unit fluid check important | every 37,000 mi (60,000 km) | Follow the service book — the petrol uses a dual-clutch and the Super Hybrid a dedicated hybrid drive unit. |
| Brake fluid important | every 24 months | — |
| High-voltage battery & 12V check (Super Hybrid) | every 12 months | Include the plug-in battery, cooling system and 12V battery in the annual inspection. |

Known problems
- Worth watching
Dual-clutch (DCT) low-speed hesitation and jerkiness
Symptoms: Hesitant or jerky take-up from a standstill and in stop-and-go traffic, occasional clunk on low-speed engagement, and a slight pause before the gearbox picks a gear.
What to do: Low-speed lumpiness is largely a trait of the wet dual-clutch rather than a torque-converter automatic. Keep the transmission software updated at the dealer and change the DCT fluid on schedule. Have it checked if the jerking comes with warning lights, slipping or overheating messages.
- Good to know
Infotainment and software glitches
Symptoms: Laggy or unresponsive touchscreen, occasional freeze or spontaneous reboot, connectivity dropouts, and spurious driver-assist warnings.
What to do: Most are resolved by a head-unit software update or reset at the dealer. Note the exact conditions that trigger the fault so service can reproduce and reflash it.
Service schedule
| Item | Interval | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Engine oil & filter change | every 6,000 mi (10,000 km) or 12 months | Turbo direct-injection — many owners shorten under severe/short-trip use. |
| Cabin filter | every 9,000 mi (15,000 km) | — |
| Air filter | every 19,000 mi (30,000 km) | — |
| Spark plugs important | every 25,000 mi (40,000 km) | Turbo GDi — keep to the interval. |
| 7-speed wet dual-clutch (DCT) fluid & filter important | every 37,000 mi (60,000 km) | Change the wet DCT fluid on time to protect the clutch pack; verify the interval in the service book. |
| Brake fluid important | every 24 months | — |
| Timing chain inspection | — | Chain-driven — inspect for noise rather than scheduled replacement. |
Manufacturer-declared fuel economy
No manufacturer-declared figures for this model are in the Knowledge Base yet. A figure without the cycle it was measured under is not comparable to anything, so we publish none rather than a number you cannot interpret.

That's 10 for today
The free web limit resets tomorrow. In the Brimly app the assistant knows your specific car — its real mileage, fuel log, and service history.
The conversation is stored only in your browser — we don't keep it on our servers.
A starting point, not a diagnosis: this page describes what tends to happen to this model, and a workshop confirms what is happening to your car.
Track your own car, not the model average
Brimly logs your fill-ups, mileage and service history on your iPhone — and its assistant answers about your car, with its numbers.
Frequently asked
What are the most common MG HS problems?
The faults reported most often are: Dual-clutch (DCT) low-speed hesitation and jerkiness; Infotainment and software glitches; New generation — limited long-term data. Symptoms, the mileage each appears at and what to do about it are all above.
How often does the MG HS need servicing?
Engine oil & filter change — every 6,000 mi (10,000 km) or 12 months. The full published schedule is above; your car's own service book always takes precedence.
Where does this data come from?
Brimly's Vehicle Knowledge Base — the same verified facts the app's AI assistant answers from. Every fault is written up from public sources and then checked by a human before it is published; nothing here is generated on the fly.
