    Dust ingestion past the air filter (2015-2020 diesel)

    Symptoms: Sudden loss of power / limp mode, stability & traction control warning lights, MAF-related fault codes (P0100-family), often after dusty-road use.

    What to do: Fine dust getting past a distorted airbox lid seal contaminates the mass-air-flow sensor and drops the engine into limp mode. Toyota ran a customer service campaign with a revised airbox/seal - check the VIN for eligibility, keep the air filter and airbox seal in good order, and clean or replace a contaminated MAF.

  • Worth watching usually from 19,000 mi (30,000 km)

    2.8 (1GD-FTV) DPF clogging and active-regen faults

    Symptoms: White/smelly exhaust smoke, DPF warning, incomplete or excessively frequent regens, higher fuel and oil consumption; oil level rising from regen fuel dilution.

    What to do: The 2.8 diesel had well-documented DPF/regeneration trouble in short-trip use, centred on the in-exhaust (fifth) injector that enables the regen burn. Toyota issued fixes/updates and was subject to an Australian class action. Give the ute regular sustained highway running, keep up with updates, and monitor the oil level.

    Diesel injector wear at higher mileage

    Symptoms: Rough idle, hesitation, hard starting, increased smoke; injector-balance faults on scan.

    What to do: Like most modern common-rail diesels, HiLux injectors are sensitive to fuel quality and wear over high mileage. Maintain fuel-filter changes and address rough-running early; this is high-mileage wear rather than an inherent design defect.
