Lada XRAY: common problems, service schedule and fuel economy
What typically goes wrong on the Lada XRAY, at what mileage, and what keeping it right involves — from Brimly's Vehicle Knowledge Base, where every fault is checked by a human before publication.

Known problems
- Critical usually 28,000–56,000 mi (45,000–90,000 km)
Timing belt: bent valves on the VAZ engines
Symptoms: a snapped or slipped belt on the interference VAZ 21129/21179 lets pistons strike the valves; the water pump is belt-driven and can seize
What to do: On VAZ-engined cars replace the belt with the water pump and rollers on schedule and do not stretch the interval. The H4M is chain-driven and does not have this failure mode.
- Worth watching usually 0–62,000 mi (0–100,000 km)
1.8 (21179) high oil consumption
Symptoms: oil level drops noticeably between changes; early 1.8 engines could use a litre or more per 1,000 km
What to do: On a 1.8, check the dipstick regularly and top up to avoid running low. AvtoVAZ revised the pistons, valve guides and calibration and moved to 5W-40, which sharply cut consumption on later engines, but older 1.8s can still drink oil and may eventually need piston/ring work.
- Worth watching usually 6,000–50,000 mi (10,000–80,000 km)
AMT robot: jerky shifts, clutch wear and overheating
Symptoms: hesitation, jerky changes and shift hang-ups; premature clutch wear and AMT overheating, worst in slow traffic and on hills
What to do: On an AMT car keep the dealer firmware updated, avoid slipping the clutch on inclines and let the box cool in heavy traffic; budget for clutch service. A manual car avoids the problem entirely.
- Worth watching usually from 25,000 mi (40,000 km)
Right engine mount wear and vibration
Symptoms: increasing engine vibration felt in the cabin, especially at idle or under load — often the right-hand engine mount, notably on the H4M
What to do: Have the engine mounts checked if vibration grows; replacing a worn right-hand mount is an inexpensive fix that restores smoothness.
- Good to know usually from 25,000 mi (40,000 km)
Suspension wear, thin paint and interior rattles
Symptoms: front-end knocks over bumps from worn links/bushings; easily chipped paint; cabin squeaks and occasional electrical niggles
What to do: Check the front suspension links, ball joints and bushings periodically (cheap wear items on poor roads), touch up stone chips, and chase rattles to loose trim.
Service schedule
| Item | Interval | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Cabin filter | every 9,000 mi (15,000 km) | — |
| Engine oil & filter change | every 9,000 mi (15,000 km) or 12 months | halve to ~7,500 km for city/short-trip use; shorten on the 1.8 if it consumes oil |
| Air filter | every 19,000 mi (30,000 km) | — |
| Spark plugs | every 19,000 mi (30,000 km) | petrol only |
| Timing belt & water pump (VAZ 21129/21179) critical | every 56,000 mi (90,000 km) | both VAZ engines are interference and the water pump is belt-driven — a snapped belt or seized pump bends valves |
| Brake fluid important | every 36 months | — |
| Timing chain & valve clearances (H4M) important | — | the H4M is chain-driven (chain lasts the engine's life) but has no hydraulic lifters — check/adjust valve clearances every ~80,000–100,000 km |
Manufacturer-declared fuel economy
No manufacturer-declared figures for this model are in the Knowledge Base yet. A figure without the cycle it was measured under is not comparable to anything, so we publish none rather than a number you cannot interpret.

That's 10 for today
The free web limit resets tomorrow. In the Brimly app the assistant knows your specific car — its real mileage, fuel log, and service history.
The conversation is stored only in your browser — we don't keep it on our servers.
A starting point, not a diagnosis: this page describes what tends to happen to this model, and a workshop confirms what is happening to your car.

Brimly logs your fill-ups, mileage and service history on your iPhone — and its assistant answers about your car, with its numbers.
Frequently asked
What are the most common Lada XRAY problems?
The faults reported most often are: Timing belt: bent valves on the VAZ engines; 1.8 (21179) high oil consumption; AMT robot: jerky shifts, clutch wear and overheating. Symptoms, the mileage each appears at and what to do about it are all above.
How often does the Lada XRAY need servicing?
Engine oil & filter change — every 9,000 mi (15,000 km) or 12 months. The full published schedule is above; your car's own service book always takes precedence.
Where does this data come from?
Brimly's Vehicle Knowledge Base — the same verified facts the app's AI assistant answers from. Every fault is written up from public sources and then checked by a human before it is published; nothing here is generated on the fly.
