Symptoms: DPF that fails to regenerate cleanly, white smoke and a noxious odour during regens, warning lights, and engine-oil level rise from fuel dilution
What to do: 1GD-FTV and 2GD-FTV diesels built roughly October 2015 – April 2020 were the subject of an Australian DPF class action; some cars did not regenerate automatically and blew unburnt fuel as white smoke. Toyota revised the DPF (improvements from June 2018, an all-new system from May 2020) and extended DPF-system warranty coverage to 10 years. Check whether the vehicle falls in the affected build window and had the DPF remedy applied, drive it on the highway periodically, and watch the oil level.

Injector, EGR and turbo carbon build-up at high mileage
Symptoms: rough idle, reduced power, occasional smoke and EGR/injector/turbo fault codes as kilometres climb
What to do: Like most modern common-rail diesels the 2.8 accumulates carbon in the EGR and intake and sees injector and turbo wear at high kilometres, worsened by short-trip use. Keep to on-time oil and fuel-filter servicing, use quality diesel, and treat this as expected high-km maintenance rather than a sudden failure.
